GlobalG.A.P. (good agricultural practice standard)

GlobalG.A.P. is a private certification standard for farm production that retailers and exporters use to check the conditions a crop was grown in. The audit covers plant protection, fertilisation, water, worker hygiene and the ability to trace a batch back to a specific field.

The certificate comes from a commercial contract, not from law. An orchard, a vegetable farm or a producer group needs it when selling to retail chains or for export, because the buyer writes it into the contract and checks the grower's number in the standard's database before the season. Without it the produce usually goes to the wholesale market at a different price, or never reaches the negotiation.

An auditor looks at records, not declarations: treatment records with doses and pre-harvest intervals, the fertilisation log, tests of the water used for irrigation and washing, worker training and health checks, the plant protection product store, batch marking at harvest. The scope depends on the version of the standard and on what is being certified, so the checklist that applies comes from the certification body rather than from last year's notes.

The usual trap is the record written after the fact. The sprayer operator finishes late, the agronomist fills in the register at the weekend from memory or from text messages, and then dates and doses stop matching the purchase invoices and the store balance. Those three sources are exactly what the auditor compares. Electronic records are often accepted when they are complete, time-stamped and protected against backdating, but the conditions are set by the certification body, so it is worth confirming them before the audit rather than during it.

You will recognise the topic if a buyer asks about the certificate during contract talks, and if a week before the audit two people are assembling a binder out of data scattered across the operator's notebook, the agronomist's spreadsheet and the software used for subsidy applications.
